Shorewood sits on the south shore of Lake Minnetonka and stretches inland to Christmas Lake. Lots are bigger here than in most western suburbs, the trees are older, and the housing mix runs from 1960s ranches all the way up to lakefront contemporary builds on Howard's Point. We've been grinding stumps in Shorewood long enough to know which neighborhoods carry which tree mix, Christmas Lake's mature oaks, the lake-adjacent maples on Excelsior Boulevard, the wooded Country Club blocks where a single storm can drop three trees on one property.
Half our Shorewood calls are single stumps left behind by a takedown crew. The other half are multi-stump lots, five, ten, sometimes more after years of accumulated tree work. The more stumps you have, the lower the per-stump rate.
- Serving the Lake Minnetonka area since 2016
- Volume pricing on multi-stump lots (5+)
- Compact equipment that narrows to about 36 inches for tight gate access

Why Get Rid of Your Tree Stumps?
A stump in your yard isn't just an eyesore. The longer it sits, the more it complicates the property, and the case for grinding is stronger than most people realize.
Sucker Growth and Nutrient Drain
A stump left in the ground doesn't always stay dormant. Many species send up suckers, small shoots that turn into volunteer trees if left unmanaged. These pull nutrients from the surrounding soil and can outcompete the lawn, garden plants, or any new tree you'd want to plant. Removing the stump stops the cycle at the source.
Trip Hazards and Lawn Damage
Stumps are notorious for ruining mower blades and twisting ankles. Hidden in tall grass or under fallen leaves, a stump becomes a real safety risk for kids, pets, and anyone working in the yard. As the stump rots, sinkholes can develop in the surrounding soil, sometimes years after the tree came down.
Insect and Fungal Concerns
A decaying stump is a habitat for carpenter ants, termites, and beetles. In Shorewood, that habitat can spread to nearby healthy trees, garden plants, and even structures over time. Grinding the stump below grade removes the habitat and reduces the local disease pressure on the rest of your yard.
How a Shorewood Job Runs
- 1
Estimate
Text or email a photo for a quick quote, or fill out the form with a few details about your property. Most Shorewood quotes come back same-day. We respond fast because in this market, the customer who waits two days for a callback usually hires whoever called back first.
- 2
Schedule
Single-stump Shorewood jobs are usually scheduled within a week. Multi-stump jobs may push out a few days for routing. We coordinate around access constraints, equipment sizing, and any landscaping considerations on the property.
- 3
Grind
Crew arrives with the right equipment for your lot. Compact grinder that narrows down to about 36 inches for tight access, full-size for open driveways, mid-size for jobs in between. We grind 4 to 8 inches below grade as standard, deeper on request.
- 4
Cleanup
Grindings are raked into a neat pile and we sweep the work area before we leave. If you'd rather have them spread as mulch across the yard or hauled off-site, both are available as add-ons for a flat fee.
Shorewood Neighborhoods We Work In
Shorewood is a big enough city that the work changes a lot from one part of town to another. Christmas Lake doesn't look like Howard's Point. Here's what we see most in each area.
Christmas Lake
Wooded lots on and around Christmas Lake, mature oaks, basswood, and a steady stream of multi-stump jobs after extended yard projects. Tight forested access on some of the older blocks; we lean on the compact grinder here.
Howard's Point and the south Lake Minnetonka shoreline
Lakefront and lake-adjacent lots, larger parcels, and high-end homes with landscaped grounds. Foundation-aware grinding is standard here, a lot of these stumps sit within fifteen feet of a wall or hardscape.
Minnetonka Country Club neighborhood
Established mid-century blocks with mature canopy, including a heavy mix of silver maple and oak. We do consistent volume work in this area.
Excelsior Boulevard / Highway 7 corridor
The arterial running across the city. Mix of older blocks and newer construction. Standard suburban access on most lots, with builder-leftover stumps showing up on the recent-construction parcels.
Woodland Cove area
Newer townhome and single-family construction toward the western edge of the city. Builder-leftover stumps from site clearing are common in the first few years after move-in.
Lot Types We Handle Most
- Lake-adjacent lots along south Lake Minnetonka and Christmas Lake, wet-soil scheduling, careful access
- Wooded mid-century yards in the Country Club blocks, multi-stump norm
- Mature suburban yards with 40-plus-year-old silver maples and oaks near foundations
- HOA-governed properties including Amesbury and Woodland Cove townhomes, we handle association sign-off paperwork on request
- Recent-construction lots where the builder left stumps from site clearing

Storm Recovery in Shorewood
The south shore of Lake Minnetonka takes its share of straight-line wind events every summer, and Shorewood's mature canopy means even a single bad storm can drop dozens of trees across town. We're still grinding stumps from storms going back two and three summers.
If you had a tree taken down after a storm and the removal company didn't grind the stump (most don't, it's a separate trade), we finish the job. Insurance-related work is welcome; we provide invoices structured for reimbursement.
What to Expect After We Leave
You'll have a depression where the stump was, filled with grindings 4 to 8 inches deep depending on how deep we ground. Grindings settle over two to three months as they decompose. If you're planning to plant grass or sod, wait for the settle to finish first, or request haul-away and bring in fresh topsoil. If you're planting a new tree in the same spot, wait at least six months and then dig out the remaining grindings before planting. We can advise on timing based on your specific plan.

Alexander & Kayla Sagal
Wow! They came so fast and helped us get our sod project back on track. They grinded 3 stumps in no time at all and the bid came in exactly as another company that couldn't do it for 5 more days. Great service, would recommend!
Kelly Knaus
They've been a fantastic service provider for years, both at my own homes and for clients' properties. The process is incredibly easy. They show up, get the job done well, and make payment simple with easy one-click options when the work is complete. Reliable, convenient, and consistently great quality work every time.
Roxanne Anderson
We had two stumps removed by ByeBye Stumps. Communication was great, they handled getting the utilities marked and cleaned up any dirt on the driveway and street afterwards, a nice touch. I got three estimates and they were reasonably priced. I will recommend them to family and friends. Thank you Lucas and Chris.
What Shorewood Clients Ask Before They Hire
How much does a stump grinding job cost?
Every property is different, so pricing depends on factors like stump size, the number of stumps, root systems, accessibility, and location. Call us or fill out the quote form with a few details (photos help!) and we'll provide a personalized estimate based on your specific project.
Do you grind close to the foundation of the house?
Yes. We can grind close to foundations and other obstacles as long as we have enough room to get the machine into position. We typically get within 6 inches of the object.
What happens to the hole?
You'll have a depression usually 4 to 8 inches deep. For re-growing grass, you'll want to remove as much of the grindings as possible and fill the hole with fresh topsoil. Removing the grindings prevents settling over time and keeps mushrooms from growing as the mulch decays. We offer both grindings disposal and soil installation upon request.
Can you work around our septic, well, or irrigation?
Yes. We need to know where the septic lines, well cap, and irrigation heads are before we start, so mention these are in the area so we can make a note for the crew. If you have a site plan leave it out for us to refer to. If you don't have a site plan mark each location with a stake.
Do you grind in winter?
Yes, when the ground is frozen solid. Frozen ground actually makes for cleaner grinding with less surface disturbance. January through mid-March is our winter window in most years. Some services may be limited in winter, like grinding stumps in rock, debris disposal, and soil installation.
Service Area
We grind throughout Shorewood, ZIP 55331, the south-shore area we also cover for Excelsior, Chanhassen, and Deephaven.
