Why Deephaven Homeowners Choose ByeBye Stumps

Deephaven sits on the east shore of Lake Minnetonka, wrapped by Robinsons Bay, Carsons Bay, St. Louis Bay, and Lower Lake North. The city was incorporated in 1900 and includes Cottagewood, Northome, and Summerville, three of the oldest residential areas on the lake. Heritage trees, century-old estates, and lakefront lots that have been in the same families for generations make stump work here different than the newer suburbs. We move slow on these jobs and confirm equipment access before the day of the grind.

We work Deephaven regularly. About half our calls are single stumps left behind by a takedown crew. The other half are multi-stump jobs on bigger parcels, five, ten, sometimes more after years of accumulated tree work. The more stumps you have, the lower the per-stump rate.

  • Serving the Lake Minnetonka area since 2016
  • Volume pricing on multi-stump lots (5+)
  • Compact equipment that narrows to about 36 inches for tight gate access

Why Get Rid of Your Tree Stumps?

A stump in your yard isn't just an eyesore. The longer it sits, the more it complicates the property, and the case for grinding is stronger than most people realize.

Sucker Growth and Nutrient Drain

A stump left in the ground doesn't always stay dormant. Many species send up suckers, small shoots that turn into volunteer trees if left unmanaged. These pull nutrients from the surrounding soil and can outcompete the lawn, garden plants, or any new tree you'd want to plant. Removing the stump stops the cycle at the source.

Trip Hazards and Lawn Damage

Stumps are notorious for ruining mower blades and twisting ankles. Hidden in tall grass or under fallen leaves, a stump becomes a real safety risk for kids, pets, and anyone working in the yard. As the stump rots, sinkholes can develop in the surrounding soil, sometimes years after the tree came down.

Insect and Fungal Concerns

A decaying stump is a habitat for carpenter ants, termites, and beetles. In Deephaven, that habitat can spread to nearby healthy trees, garden plants, and even structures over time. Grinding the stump below grade removes the habitat and reduces the local disease pressure on the rest of your yard.

How a Deephaven Job Runs

  1. 1

    Estimate

Text or email a photo for a quick quote, or fill out the form with a few details about your property. Most Deephaven quotes come back same-day. We respond fast because in this market, the customer who waits two days for a callback usually hires whoever called back first.

  2. 2

    Schedule

Single-stump Deephaven jobs are usually scheduled within a week. Multi-stump jobs may push out a few days for routing. We coordinate around access constraints, equipment sizing, and any landscaping considerations on the property.

  3. 3

    Grind

Crew arrives with the right equipment for your lot. Compact grinder that narrows down to about 36 inches for tight access, full-size for open driveways, mid-size for jobs in between. We grind 4 to 8 inches below grade as standard, deeper on request.

  4. 4

    Cleanup

Grindings are raked into a neat pile and we sweep the work area before we leave. If you'd rather have them spread as mulch across the yard or hauled off-site, both are available as add-ons for a flat fee.

Deephaven Neighborhoods We Work In

Deephaven incorporated in 1900 by uniting Deephaven, Cottagewood, Northome, and Summerville. Each of those original areas still has its own character, and the work changes a lot from one to the next.

Cottagewood (Carsons Bay side)

Over a hundred lakefront homes ranging from charming 19th-century cottages to grand historic estates. The Cottagewood General Store has been there since 1895. Tight side-yard access on most lots and stumps within fifteen feet of stone walls is the norm. We default to the compact grinder here.

Northome (St. Louis Bay)

Originally Charles Gibson's lake estate before the area was sold and divided. Heritage trees, larger parcels, and lakefront properties with landscaped grounds. Foundation-aware grinding is standard.

Summerville

One of the four original neighborhoods that merged into Deephaven. Older mid-century blocks with mature canopy and standard suburban access on most lots.

Robinsons Bay shoreline

Lakefront homes along the eastern shore of Robinsons Bay. Wet-soil scheduling matters on these lots, particularly in spring.

Inland Blocks East of the Lake

Older established homes set back from the shoreline. Mature canopy, tight access on the older streets, and frequent calls for multi-stump cleanup work.

Lot Types We Handle Most

  • Lakefront heritage lots along Carsons, Robinsons, and St. Louis Bays, wet-soil scheduling, careful access, foundation-aware grinding
  • Tight-access cottage lots in Cottagewood, compact equipment by default
  • Established estate properties with century-old trees and landscaped grounds
  • HOA-governed properties, we handle association sign-off paperwork on request
  • Mature inland yards with 40-plus-year-old silver maples and oaks near foundations

Storm Recovery in Deephaven

The east shore of Lake Minnetonka takes its share of straight-line wind events every summer, and Deephaven's mature canopy means even a single bad storm can drop dozens of trees across town. We're still grinding stumps from storms going back two and three summers.

If you had a tree taken down after a storm and the removal company didn't grind the stump (most don't, it's a separate trade), we finish the job. Insurance-related work is welcome; we provide invoices structured for reimbursement.

What to Expect After We Leave

You'll have a depression where the stump was, filled with grindings 4 to 8 inches deep depending on how deep we ground. Grindings settle over two to three months as they decompose. If you're planning to plant grass or sod, wait for the settle to finish first, or request haul-away and bring in fresh topsoil. If you're planting a new tree in the same spot, wait at least six months and then dig out the remaining grindings before planting. We can advise on timing based on your specific plan.

What Deephaven Clients Ask Before They Hire

How much does a stump grinding job cost?

Every property is different, so pricing depends on factors like stump size, the number of stumps, root systems, accessibility, and location. Call us or fill out the quote form with a few details (photos help!) and we'll provide a personalized estimate based on your specific project.

Do you grind close to the foundation of the house?

Yes. We can grind close to foundations and other obstacles as long as we have enough room to get the machine into position. We typically get within 6 inches of the object.

What happens to the hole?

You'll have a depression usually 4 to 8 inches deep. For re-growing grass, you'll want to remove as much of the grindings as possible and fill the hole with fresh topsoil. Removing the grindings prevents settling over time and keeps mushrooms from growing as the mulch decays. We offer both grindings disposal and soil installation upon request.

Can you work around our septic, well, or irrigation?

Yes. We need to know where the septic lines, well cap, and irrigation heads are before we start, so mention these are in the area so we can make a note for the crew. If you have a site plan leave it out for us to refer to. If you don't have a site plan mark each location with a stake.

Do you grind in winter?

Yes, when the ground is frozen solid. Frozen ground actually makes for cleaner grinding with less surface disturbance. January through mid-March is our winter window in most years. Some services may be limited in winter, like grinding stumps in rock, debris disposal, and soil installation.
