Mound is built on water, the city is wrapped around Cooks Bay, Harrisons Bay, Jennings Bay, and the West Arm, and the lakes themselves geographically define the neighborhoods. That means stump work in Mound is rarely standard. The Three Points peninsula, the Island Park causeway, the Highlands above Cooks Bay, and the older blocks of Shirley Hills each have their own access challenges and their own tree mix.
We work Mound regularly. About half our calls are single stumps left behind after a tree takedown. The other half are multi-stump jobs where a homeowner has been putting it off, five, ten, sometimes more after years of accumulated tree work. The more stumps you have, the lower the per-stump rate.
- Serving the Lake Minnetonka area since 2016
- Volume pricing on multi-stump lots (5+)
- Compact equipment that narrows to about 36 inches for tight gate access

Why Get Rid of Your Tree Stumps?
A stump in your yard isn't just an eyesore. The longer it sits, the more it complicates the property, and the case for grinding is stronger than most people realize.
Sucker Growth and Nutrient Drain
A stump left in the ground doesn't always stay dormant. Many species send up suckers, small shoots that turn into volunteer trees if left unmanaged. These pull nutrients from the surrounding soil and can outcompete the lawn, garden plants, or any new tree you'd want to plant. Removing the stump stops the cycle at the source.
Trip Hazards and Lawn Damage
Stumps are notorious for ruining mower blades and twisting ankles. Hidden in tall grass or under fallen leaves, a stump becomes a real safety risk for kids, pets, and anyone working in the yard. As the stump rots, sinkholes can develop in the surrounding soil, sometimes years after the tree came down.
Insect and Fungal Concerns
A decaying stump is a habitat for carpenter ants, termites, and beetles. In Mound, that habitat can spread to nearby healthy trees, garden plants, and even structures over time. Grinding the stump below grade removes the habitat and reduces the local disease pressure on the rest of your yard.
How a Mound Job Runs
- 1
Estimate
Text or email a photo for a quick quote, or fill out the form with a few details about your property. Most Mound quotes come back same-day. We respond fast because in this market, the customer who waits two days for a callback usually hires whoever called back first.
- 2
Schedule
Single-stump Mound jobs are usually scheduled within a week. Multi-stump jobs may push out a few days for routing. We coordinate around access constraints, equipment sizing, and any landscaping considerations on the property.
- 3
Grind
Crew arrives with the right equipment for your lot. Compact grinder that narrows down to about 36 inches for tight access, full-size for open driveways, mid-size for jobs in between. We grind 4 to 8 inches below grade as standard, deeper on request.
- 4
Cleanup
Grindings are raked into a neat pile and we sweep the work area before we leave. If you'd rather have them spread as mulch across the yard or hauled off-site, both are available as add-ons for a flat fee.
Mound Neighborhoods We Work In
Mound is a city of peninsulas and bays. The work we do on Three Points doesn't look like the work we do up in the Highlands. Here's what we see most in each area.
Three Points (North Peninsula)
A trio of slender peninsulas extending into the West Arm. Older lakeshore homes, narrow streets, and tight side-yard access on a lot of the lots. We bring the compact grinder here by default. Wet-soil scheduling matters, when the lake is high, the lower lots stay saturated.
Island Park
Quiet residential blocks with a close-knit, treed character. Mature canopy, single-family lots, and mostly standard suburban access. This is some of the most volume-friendly stump work in Mound.
Shirley Hills (North of Downtown)
Mid-century homes on rolling lots above Harrisons and Cooks Bays. Mature silver maples and oaks are common, often within fifteen feet of the foundation. Foundation-aware grinding is standard here.
The Highlands (above Cooks Bay)
Larger parcels, older trees, and more multi-stump jobs than the rest of Mound. Several homeowners up here have called us for cleanup after extended yard projects, five-plus stumps in a single visit.
Grandview Boulevard / downtown Mound corridor
Older smaller lots, mature canopy, occasional irrigation and septic considerations. We always ask for site plans on the older blocks before starting.
Lot Types We Handle Most
- Lakefront and lake-adjacent lots along Cooks, Harrisons, Jennings, and West Arm, wet-soil scheduling, careful access
- Peninsula lots on Three Points and Island Park with tight side-yard access
- Hillside lots in Shirley Hills and the Highlands
- Mature suburban yards with 40-plus-year-old silver maples and oaks near foundations
- Septic-system properties on the unsewered edges, we work around lines and tanks

Storm Recovery in Mound
The west end of Lake Minnetonka takes its share of straight-line wind events every summer, and Mound's mature canopy and water-adjacent exposure mean even a single bad storm can drop dozens of trees across town. We're still grinding stumps from storms going back two and three summers.
If you had a tree taken down after a storm and the removal company didn't grind the stump (most don't, it's a separate trade), we finish the job. Insurance-related work is welcome; we provide invoices structured for reimbursement.
What to Expect After We Leave
You'll have a depression where the stump was, filled with grindings 4 to 8 inches deep depending on how deep we ground. Grindings settle over two to three months as they decompose. If you're planning to plant grass or sod, wait for the settle to finish first, or request haul-away and bring in fresh topsoil. If you're planting a new tree in the same spot, wait at least six months and then dig out the remaining grindings before planting. We can advise on timing based on your specific plan.

Alexander & Kayla Sagal
Wow! They came so fast and helped us get our sod project back on track. They grinded 3 stumps in no time at all and the bid came in exactly as another company that couldn't do it for 5 more days. Great service, would recommend!
Kelly Knaus
They've been a fantastic service provider for years, both at my own homes and for clients' properties. The process is incredibly easy. They show up, get the job done well, and make payment simple with easy one-click options when the work is complete. Reliable, convenient, and consistently great quality work every time.
Roxanne Anderson
We had two stumps removed by ByeBye Stumps. Communication was great, they handled getting the utilities marked and cleaned up any dirt on the driveway and street afterwards, a nice touch. I got three estimates and they were reasonably priced. I will recommend them to family and friends. Thank you Lucas and Chris.
What Mound Clients Ask Before They Hire
How much does a stump grinding job cost?
Every property is different, so pricing depends on factors like stump size, the number of stumps, root systems, accessibility, and location. Call us or fill out the quote form with a few details (photos help!) and we'll provide a personalized estimate based on your specific project.
Do you grind close to the foundation of the house?
Yes. We can grind close to foundations and other obstacles as long as we have enough room to get the machine into position. We typically get within 6 inches of the object.
What happens to the hole?
You'll have a depression usually 4 to 8 inches deep. For re-growing grass, you'll want to remove as much of the grindings as possible and fill the hole with fresh topsoil. Removing the grindings prevents settling over time and keeps mushrooms from growing as the mulch decays. We offer both grindings disposal and soil installation upon request.
Can you work around our septic or well?
Yes. A lot of Mound's older blocks are still on septic. We need to know where the lines and tank are before we start, so please mention at the time of getting an estimate and if you have a site plan, have it out for us.
Do you grind in winter?
Yes, when the ground is frozen solid. Frozen ground actually makes for cleaner grinding with less surface disturbance. January through mid-March is our winter window in most years. Some services may be limited in winter, like grinding stumps in rock, debris disposal, and soil installation.
Service Area
We grind throughout Mound, ZIP 55364, the west-lake area we share with Minnetrista and Orono.
